Baystate Medical Practices, Inc. (BMP) employs more than 500 physicians and advanced practitioners in 35 primary care and specialty practices in more than 60 locations across western Massachusetts. Academics

Baystate Medical Center has a strong tradition of excellence in graduate medical education. As an academic medical center and the Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine, Baystate Medical Center welcomes approximately 300 new residents and fellows and more than 350 medical students who complete clinical clerkships in various specialties each year. More than 1,600 nursing students and 400 allied health students from local colleges and universities complete clinical training as part of associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral-level work.

Baystate Medical Center’s newly renovated Simulation Center and Goldberg Surgical Skills Laboratory was completed in April 2008. The center is one of only 39 American College of Surgeons–accredited, Level 1 comprehensive education institutes in the world.

Research

In addition to private and NIH-sponsored research grants, Baystate Health collaborates with the University of Massachusetts Amherst to bring the benefits of biomedical technology and research to the region through the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute. The institute was created in 2002 as a joint venture of Baystate Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Amherst with dual missions of biomedical research and economic development.

Continued Growth

Baystate Medical Center recently completed building a visionary new facility that not only meets our community’s needs today, but lays the foundation for future growth. Hundreds of people—from patients to care providers to the community at large shared ideas and experiences to design the 641,000 sq. foot facility which houses the Davis Family Heart & Vascular Center, new patient care units with spacious private rooms, and shell space for future growth, all using the latest in environmentally friendly building practices.

In late 2012 Baystate Medical Center also opened its brand new Emergency Department and Trauma Center that features the region’s only completely separate pediatric Emergency Department, with child-sized facilities, 18 treatment rooms and a separate waiting area. The new facilities also accommodate a private, secure area for patients with behavioral issues, an expanded trauma suite that is adjacent to a sheltered ambulance bay and helipad, as well as patient rooms with glass-front doors instead of bays separated by curtains.

Additionally, Baystate Health recently established a brand new Breast & Wellness Center where specialists from Radiology & Imaging, along with other staff, work together to bring patients the latest in screening, diagnostic, and treatment options for breast and health wellness.

Baystate Health uses the latest technology to enhance quality, safety and efficiency of care. We are a national leader because of the commitment of employees and medical staff to planning for and using new technology to deliver better, safer care. Baystate Medical Center ranks among the top 1% of hospitals in the United States for most advanced Electronic Medical Record (EMR), according to HIMSS Analytics. Baystate Health has also been recognized as “one of the most wired health providers in the nation” by Hospitals & Networks magazine, offering patients, visitors and providers free wireless Internet access since 2005. Additional advancements in technology include a digital mammography system, a new electronic LCD screen in the ER triage area, and bar code scanning technology for patient identification and tracking.
